Avocado

A creamy fruit for toast, salads, dips, tacos, sauces, and cool toppings.

What to look for

A ripe avocado yields slightly to gentle palm pressure without feeling hollow or mushy. Avoid squeezing repeatedly with fingertips, which bruises the flesh.

Store it thoughtfully

Ripen firm avocados at room temperature, then refrigerate ripe ones briefly. Cover cut flesh closely; acid slows browning but does not stop it completely.

How to use it

Cut around the pit on a stable board, twist apart, and remove the pit carefully with a spoon rather than striking it. Season after mashing or slicing.

When you need a substitute

Hummus offers creaminess on toast; Greek yogurt works in some sauces. Neither copies avocado’s fat or flavor.

A common pitfallHolding an avocado in your hand while cutting or removing the pit risks a serious knife injury.

Substitutions change flavor, texture, and sometimes safety or structure. Check the recipe and product labels, especially for dietary needs.
