Ground beef

Minced beef for burgers, meatballs, tacos, sauces, and casseroles, sold at different fat levels.

What to look for

Higher-fat blends stay juicier in burgers; leaner blends create less rendered fat in sauces. Check color, packaging, and the use-by date.

Store it thoughtfully

Refrigerate cold on a low shelf and cook or freeze promptly. Thaw in the refrigerator and prevent raw juices from touching other foods.

How to use it

For crumbles, spread in a hot pan and let sections brown before breaking them smaller. Cook ground beef to 160°F / 71°C.

When you need a substitute

Ground turkey or plant-based crumbles differ in fat, moisture, seasoning, and safe cooking needs. Adjust the recipe rather than assuming identical behavior.

A common pitfallPressing burger patties repeatedly squeezes out moisture, while judging only by color can miss unsafe undercooking.

Substitutions change flavor, texture, and sometimes safety or structure. Check the recipe and product labels, especially for dietary needs.
