What to look for

Look for an easy-to-read display, a thin probe, a useful temperature range, and clear cleaning instructions. Check whether the model can be calibrated.

How to use it

  1. Insert into the thickest part, away from bone or the pan.

  2. Check more than one spot in uneven or large pieces.

  3. Do not leave an instant-read probe in the oven unless designed for it.

Make it last

Clean the probe before and after use according to the manual. Do not submerge a unit unless its waterproof rating explicitly allows it.

Before you buyAn oven-safe leave-in probe is a different tool, useful for monitoring larger roasts.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular tool. This is general educational guidance, not a hands-on product review.
